Balance

Although more color in the Denison model can be better for the performance of an organization, this may not be true if the balance of the culture is neglected. Research has shown that an imbalance between the Mission and Adaptability trait can negatively impact performance measures of an organization.

Change Monitor

Are there benefits in using the Change Monitor? Research on this tool indicates that when re-surveyed, the culture of organizations that had used the Change Monitor improved more than the culture of those that had not used the tool. Significant mean differences on the indexes between the first and second time the survey was administered were found, as well meaningful percentile differences.

Culture Change Over Time

 

To explore culture change in organizations that have used the Denison Organizational Culture Survey (DOCS) more than once, researchers at Denison conducted analyses comparing culture scores from Time 1 and Time 2 survey administrations. Specifically, researchers sought to investigate whether there are significant and meaningful differences.

Customer Satisfaction

The culture scores and customer satisfaction scores of auto dealerships were compared. The comparison shows a link between higher culture scores and higher customer satisfaction ratings. Customer Focus and Coordination & Integration were indexes that had the highest correlations with customer satisfaction scores.

Diversity

This presentation explores the relationship between perceptions on workplace diversity management and organizational culture. Positive perceptions of diversity management practices was strongly related with higher Involvement scores, and higher culture scores in general.

This study sampled the results of 90 organizations that took both the Denison Organizational Culture Survey (DOCS) and the Engagement Module.

Gender and Leadership

This research covered the influence of gender and age on perceptions of leadership, and the influence of a female (versus male) dominated industry on self and rater perceptions of a leader.  This research was presented by Lindsey Kotrba and Ashley Guidroz in a Denison Consulting webinar and as a Research Note in 2011.

Impact on Performance 2000 - 2010

This slide displays how organizational culture is linked to bottom line performance. Organizations with higher performing cultures have greater profitability, sales growth, and market-to-book ratio than organizations with lower performing cultures.

Innovation-Culture

Innovation is defined as the successful implementation of creative ideas within an organization.

Research shows that, in comparison to lower performing cultures, organizations with high performing cultures are linked with more new product development and market value.

Leadership-Culture Link

To assess the relationship between Leadership and Culture scores, researchers at Denison compared the ratings of leaders in departments with the highest and lowest culture scores. Departments with higher culture scores had higher scoring leaders in comparison to leaders in departments with lower culture scores. Also, direct report and boss ratings are more similar to culture scores than peer ratings.

Long Term Effects of Culture on Performance

 

The return-on-assets (ROA) of organizations were compared to their culture scores over a period of three years. Organizations with higher culture scores have consistently remained above average in ROA, and, in most cases, have increased their percentage in ROA with each successive year.

Safety

When comparing Lost Time due Accident (LTA) rates with Culture scores, research found that there is a difference in culture between facilities in an organization with zero LTA and facilities with one or more LTA. The Mission and Consistency traits, and the Creating Change index displayed the biggest differences between these two types of facilities.
