Denison Consulting Finds Positive Impact of Leadership Coaching At the Defense Logistics Agency

Two-Year Study Shows Demonstrable Improvement in Leadership and Managerial Skills

Washington D.C. – June 1, 2009 -- Denison Consulting, the world’s leader in organizational leadership and culture assessment solutions, today released the results of a two-year study on the effectiveness of leadership coaching and its impact on leadership and managerial skills. The study, conducted with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), www.dla.mil, the largest government agency that provides logistics support to the U.S. Department of Defense, will be presented today at the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) annual conference, www.astd.org, June 1-3, 2009, Washington, DC, Booth #2023.

The DLA is one of the largest government agencies that provides an annual $40 billion of logistics support to the U.S. Department of Defense and has assisted relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina, the 2007 California fires and other natural disasters around the globe.

“Executive coaching has become an important part of leadership development today,” said Professor Daniel Denison, CEO and Founding Partner at Denison Consulting. “With all the time and dollars being invested in these efforts, how can organizations evaluate the effectiveness of their coaching programs? What effect does concentrated coaching have on a manager? Does this professional development enable them to grow as a leader? Our study findings uncover the value, transferrable skills and tangible benefits that are gained from these programs.”

The study explored the impact of coaching and leadership development among a group of emerging leaders within the DLA over a two-year period. The study components included extensive one-on-one coaching and the Denison Leadership Development Survey as an assessment and diagnostic tool. Study highlights include:
  • Leadership development of newly appointed managers is critical to an organization’s current and future viability and has a direct impact on bottom line performance
  • Managers found one-on-one coaching leads to better performance in business planning, problem solving, handling conflict, and motivating subordinates
  • Managers viewed themselves as stronger and more capable in all areas of leadership including the ability to better manage up with their bosses as well as downward with their direct reports
  • Subordinates of managers in the study reported significantly better and more effective interaction with their managers
  • Managers who take time for self-reflection are better able to discern priorities and see the big picture
The Denison Leadership Development Survey (DLDS)
The Denison Leadership Development Survey (DLDS) provides leaders and managers with 360-degree feedback on a set of twelve leadership skills and practices that can impact bottom-line organizational performance. Based on the Denison model, this assessment tool is the result of over 25 years of research that examines the relationship between leadership, organizational culture and organizational effectiveness. The DLDS measures specific aspects of an individual manager’s leadership skills and benchmarks them to other leaders in our global database. Additionally, it compares self-perception with that of the supervisor, peers and direct reports using our secure, confidential 360-feedback system.
