National Cancer Institute – With Support from Denison Consulting - Focuses on Organizational Culture
Federal organization aligns its workforce with its ambitious goals for cancer eradication and control
ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN, U.S.A. (January 26, 2004) -- Denison Consulting has been contracted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland to supply organizational-development tools and services. NCI -- with Denison's support -- has launched an internal employee program to enhance the organization's efforts to fight cancer.
Denison Consulting is a leading supplier of tools and services used by companies and other organizations to diagnose and improve their organizational cultures. A part of the National Institutes of Health, the federally funded NCI is the principal unit in the United States for cancer research and training.
NCI Director Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D., has established a bold and ambitious goal for the organization -- to eliminate suffering and death due to cancer by 2015. The organizational-development effort is designed to help ensure that NCI's 4,000 team members are fully engaged and mobilized in support of the agency's mission.
"We are committed to helping NCI meet its performance targets, vital goals that have implications for all Americans," said Dan Denison, president and co-founder of Denison Consulting.
The Denison Organizational Culture Survey (DOCS), a diagnostic tool that hundreds of organizations have relied on to enhance their bottom-line performance, was used to identify organizational strengths and areas for improvement. Over 4,000 team members were invited to participate in the survey.
Mary Regel Burness, a consultant serving in NCI's Office of Workforce Development, has played a major role in planning and implementing the organizational-development effort.
NCI evaluated a range of service providers and organizational-development tools prior to selecting Denison to support the project.
"As an organization focused on research, NCI was impressed with the Denison approach because it has a solid, research-based foundation," she said. "The initiative is exciting and will help NCI achieve its organizational goals."
Team members at NCI include scientists, research fellows, technicians, administrators, consultants and support staff.
Organizational-development tools available from Denison include research-based employee surveys relating to organizational culture and leadership, as well as strategic planning to link culture change to bottom-line performance. Denison has served more than 4,000 clients, including Domino’s Pizza, Ford Motor Company, Jet Blue, Pulte Homes, and Sprint.
